Dear Funders and other Supporters of Oxford University:
In 2003, charitable institutions and businesses paid a staggering £92,959,813.72 to Oxford University. Combined with a further £69,923,045.18 from research councils and Government agencies, you have an impressive total of £162,882,858.90. The figure far exceeds what the university would receive per annum from students. Since such large sums of money are at stake, it is hardly surprising that Oxford University have been keen to silence the SPEAK campaign (unsuccessfully, one might add) by taking out injunctions against the campaign. Oxford University can't afford the truth about the horrors that go on in their research labs to get out to the people and businesses funding them.
But it is absolutely vital that you all funding the university should be aware of exactly what is going on inside the University's laboratories. This institution is responsible for the deaths of thousands of animals every year. But vivisection is absolutely not necessary and is even dangerous for people.
"Currently nine out of ten experimental drugs fail in clinical studies because we cannot accurately predict how they will behave in people based on animal studies", says Mike Leavitt, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. Acting FDA Commissioner Lester M. Crawford reports a 92% failure rate for animal-tested drugs. Baycol, Meridia, Serzone, Fen-phen, Premarin, Vioxx, Celebrax, Bextra... It's hard to stay current with the escalating list of drugs pulled from the market or slapped with restrictions -- after animal experiments determined they were "safe" for human use.
Oxford University has a cruel animal research history. Please see the facts surrounding the case of the vivisector investigated by the police for cruelty to a monkey and the types of experiments being performed on primates, and that workers employed by the university have attacked a 70 year-old protestor. Do you really want your money going to an institution that upholds the continuation of such injustices and brutalities?
Oxford University have started work on the animal torture centre in South Parks Rd. at the end of last year, which was brought to a halt in July 2004. Your companies still all help to fund Oxford University. All of you are aware of the horrors being perpetrated against non-human animals inside the walls of the university. Do not help this sort of institution to fund anymore!
How can you sleep well at nights while knowing that you are sponsoring the cruelty that is going on day by day at every vivisection laboratory? Even if it takes years animal rights organizations will be highlighting Oxford University's deceit, lies and the true nature of animal abuse at this University.
You cannot let the animals down who are being tortured in Oxford University's labs. Please do not support this torture anymore and force the Oxford University to change their testing methods to in-vitro and computer programme methods.
Yours sincerely
