Dear Honorable Officials of China,

I am so sickened by reports that in many restaurants in your cruel country monkey brains are eaten while the monkeys are still alive. They are bound alive and with full consciousness in a chair while the skull is smashed with a spoon by the consumers and the brain is eaten warm. That is so barbaric that I cannot imagine the pain that the monkeys surely have.

How can your country be so cruel to not having any animal protection law or anything other to save such incredible slaughter and pain? But what can sensible people like me in Europe expect from a country that does not respect human rights, so you probably do not even know what animal rights are or that animals feel the same suffering like we humans do!

We here in Europe also saw images of Chinese authorities bludgeoning dogs in a death sweep of Chuxiong in Yunnan province. From July 25-30, 2006, more than 50,000 dogs were viciously beaten, hung, electrocuted or poisoned. Some, companion animals out walking with families, were forcibly taken and clubbed on the spot. Others were defenceless strays, ambushed at night.

All were blameless victims of a flimsy heath care system, in which just 3 per cent of dogs are inoculated against rabies and over 2,000 people succumb to the disease annually. While I sympathize with the rise in dog bites and deaths of three people in Mouding County, rabies is a very controllable disease. Mass reactive culls have repeatedly proven incapable of curbing stray populations and inhibiting rabies outbreaks.  In fact, the primary outcome of the five-day massacre in rural south-western China is the loss of government credibility among nationals and the world.

We urge you to make enforceable animal protection laws a priority as soon as possible and also with regard to the 2008 Olympics. Many travellers will not spend money in a country that sanctions animal abuse. I understand a worldwide boycott of Chinese tourism and products is underway. I intend to join that boycott until Chinese authorities initiate momentous reforms for animals.
