Englisch version:
Air France's Import of Primates to HLS and other Labs
Chere Madame ou Monsier:
I hope you will take a moment to read my letter, which is sent in good will with nothing but the utmost concern for wild-caught primates used in research.
As you are likely aware, competitors such as Air Mauritius, British Airways and Air China have all announced new policies under which they will no longer import primates for experimentation. I encourage a corporation of your stature to be ethically accountable as well. Please do not deliver sentient creatures into lives of misery.
I am particularly alarmed Air France continues to transport live primates to Huntington Life Sciences (HLS), a contract research laboratory cited for multiple violations of the U.S. Animal Welfare Act. Huntingdon’s record includes 520 breaches of Good Laboratory Practice principles in England, the arrest of workers on animal cruelty charges, a $50,000 payoff to the U.S. Agriculture Department for sloppy records, and routine animal abuse exposed in five investigations (four within the last seven years).
In 2000, verified documents disclosed Huntingdon’s gross incompetence in a xenotransplantation study. Hundreds of monkeys with genetically engineered pig hearts stitched to their necks suffered seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, and oozing wounds. After the animals died from massive organ rejection and hemorrhage the client canceled the scientifically invalid study.
Investigative videos, photos and employee testimonials reveal HLS technicians who mistakenly insert dosing tubes into dogs lungs, causing instant death as the animals drown in toxic materials. In one video clip, a technician punches a 4-month-old beagle in the face. During a supposedly post-mortem dissection, another tech slices into the chest of a convulsing monkey.
A former HLS employee who worked in the Histology department observed depressed primates slumped in their cages rocking back and forth. Another one-time employee stated: I saw monkeys hunched over in pain after abdominal surgery. One of the employees doing the surgery told me that she had no idea what [she] was doing.
Renowned primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall has shown that primates form complex social unions and experience a full range of emotions. Chimpanzees can anticipate future events and communicate in sophisticated patterns of sign language. As importers of wild-caught primates, Air France facilitates labs like HLS, where these free-roaming animals become tortured specimens.
In fact, animal experiments "do not protect human health and well being. They endanger", says Moneim A. Fadali, M.D., Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery. Acting FDA Commissioner Lester M. Crawford reports a 92% failure rate for animal-tested drugs. The British Medical Journal reported in 2004: [Animal] research is poorly conducted and not thoroughly evaluated. Scientists described contrived illness or injury in animals as incongruous with humans and said drug doses differ substantially from those administered to humans.Y
ou may not agree that humane research alternatives should replace animal toxicity tests. Still, why would Air France want to risk credibility by association with the controversial live import trade? Please make the morally responsible decision to terminate the import of primates for experimentation.
Yours truly,
