Dear Mrs. Kelly,
Every on New Year's Eve, in a misguided attempt to spoof the dropping of the ball in New York's Times Square, Clay's Corner in Brasstown, North Carolina, holds a "Possum Drop." During the event, a wild possum in a plastic box is lowered from a boom, while onlookers cheer, shout, and use noisemakers to greet the New Year.
Possums, the only marsupials native to North America, are quiet, active, and inquisitive animals. They play an important role in the ecosystem and consume insects, slugs, snails, and even poisonous spiders. According to the National Opossum Society, possums "prefer to avoid all confrontations and wish to be left alone."
The Possum Drop is sponsored by your real estate agency RE/MAX. While you in North Carolina might think it's fun to capture and harass a helpless animal, I doubt that most RE/MAX customers would agree.
So please stop this cruel and pointless event FOREVER and drop your sponsorship of the Possum Drop.
Kind regards,
